Essential pre-assessment information

Bariatric surgery is a major, life altering intervention and it is important that you understand what you will need to do to give yourself the best possible chance for a successful outcome and are fully aware of the risks and implications of the procedure. To support you with making the right choices for your circumstances and to enable you to prepare for your initial assessment with the service, our team have put together a series of videos that will provide you with essential information.

You are required to work your way through these short videos before your first appointment with the service, which will be an online group session that will give you the opportunity to speak to our nurse and dietitian and ask questions about what to expect.  It is essential that you watch the videos on our website before this Q&A session as the content will not be covered and they contain essential information service’s clinical pathways and how bariatric surgery may impact your life. Watching these videos will support you to make informed choices about how you proceed with your care.  After your  online Q&A  session, you will be invited to attend a bariatric assessment face-to-face session where you will be asked to complete a short quiz to check your understanding of the information provided.

We would encourage you to try to implement the changes that are advised in the videos ahead of your appointments with our team. Making changes early will allow you to use the appointment time with the clinician to discuss areas that you have struggled with, and you will be able to benefit from tailored advice on overcoming these difficulties allowing you to progress within the bariatric pathway towards surgery more swiftly. You can refer back to these videos at any point whilst you are in the patient pathway and you are also able to access the handouts via the webpage.

If after watching the videos and attending the online session, you feel that you do not wish to proceed with bariatric surgery, please contact the service to cancel your assessment appointment so that it can be offered to another patient by emailing huh-tr.hhbs@nhs.net
