North Unit Critical Care: Intensive Care Unit upgrade has opened
It comes after the opening of our brand-new Intensive Care Unit (ICU) extension early last year. Increasing our total ICU capacity to 12 patients, with space for up to 24 patients if needed.
Both spaces were designed around the needs of critical care patients, with more space and upgraded facilities. A fresher design with lighted murals that bring the outdoors inside create a calmer environment for patients, their loved ones, and our staff.
We asked some of our former long-stay patients, Shelina Chowdhury and John Garry to officially open the improved unit. They were being taken care of on our ICU for many weeks and this improved space is especially beneficial for patients like them.
Shelina Chowdhury said:
“I’m proud to see the new unit open and be part of the grand opening ceremony. I am thankful for the care I received while an inpatient and glad to see a modern and well kitted unit that will ensure Homerton continues to deliver excellent care to patients.”
The upgrade has also created more side rooms for very unwell patients, and automated dispensing cabinets to make dispensing medications quicker and safer.
Critical Care Matron Pedro Silva said:
“Now that the new unit is open, we have more space in each bed bay, it’s quieter, and it will reduce non-clinical transfers between unit and recovery during times of increased acuity. It's safer and giving more time for the team to look after patients and families.
It will make a really positive impact on patients and their loved ones, as well as the team.”
We’re thrilled that the new unit is now open and treating patients. It supports our critical care teams to deliver high-quality, safe care to some of our sickest patients.
Divisional Operations Director Tayo Fowowe said:
“I am excited to see this state-of-the-art critical care unit open here at Homerton, strengthening Homerton’s commitment to providing outstanding care.
