Sialorrhea Injection Service

Welcome to the Sialorrhea Injection Service at the Homerton Hospital. Here you can find our information about how our service manages hypersalivation with botulinum toxin injections (BoNT) and how to refer.
This regional clinic offers a specialist assessment and standardised, evidence-based treatment of the salivary glands with BoNT. This leads to a reduction in saliva production for up to 6 months, although each person responds differently.

What does an appointment look like?

You will be assessed by a consultant physiotherapist who will take a history and examine your mouth. If you are assessed as being suitable for treatment with BoNT you will be offered injections into the glands in front of and below the ears (parotid glands) and the glands between your jaw and tongue (the submandibular glands). Injections are completed under ultrasound guidance. Any specific risks will be discussed with you at the time before any treatment is completed.

Who can be referred?

Anyone with hypersalivation or poor saliva control arising from a disorder of the nervous system may be referred for assessment.

Who is not suitable for referral?

People with active infection of the gums
People with untreated dental cavities
People with enlarged tonsils and adenoids

Considerations

People on anticoagulant medication may be referred but there may need to be additional planning for safe injection due to additional bleeding risk
